The 3-channel video installation White Lies (2007), in which the artist – similar to former works such as the multi-screen-projection Silent Playground (2005) - deals with common narrative structures and the interplay between reality and fiction. In total, the three synchronously presented but casually combined film sequences create a flexible logic, which always represents just one among many possible realities. Inner and outer perception of the figures become an essential part of the projected reality.
White Lies shows three generations of women from one family seated at a restaurant table laid out for dining. While waiting for their dishes, they warily eye each other, change positions and contradict each other with paradoxical sounding sentences such as “I don’t know what I said”, “I am sorry for what I said”. In the way it is assembled, the drama throws up a number of temporary alternatives; each figure also plays with and against herself, is capable of duplicating and triplicating herself. It instantly becomes clear that the women are alluding to a family secret. The scene shows a discussion which has already been sought, hoped for, attempted, avoided, sabotaged, forgotten or indeed held – but in vain – on numerous occasions before and without any result, but thereby opening up a variety of different interpretations and mutations. The figures continually keep switching positions and roles again and again: they would like to tell the truth in one moment; in another they take refuge in white lies. Tirelessly the daughter promises: “I will find out one day.”

Accompanying White Lies, Susanne Weirich presented the videos Dreigangsmenü. Training (2007) and Vorspeise.Dessert, (Starter.Dessert) 2007 as well as a series of photographs related to the video works.

Dreigangmenü. Training (Three course meal.Training (2007): focuses on the preparations for a festive dinner: we see five hotel business students cleaning glasses, folding serviettes and laying the table, confusing dessert spoons or cruet stands. Their actions are corrected by an instructor, who, in a parallel film scene, is seen serving the three women from White Lies. In between correcting her students, the instructor suddenly yanks the tablecloth from under the hands of the three women.

Vorspeise.Dessert, (Starter.Dessert) 2007: Hands of three different women waiting for their dishes at a restaurant table and hands of waiters preparing the dessert.
